CEDAR FALLS - Joan Mae Hankins, 75, of Cedar Falls, died Thursday, July 28, 2005, in Watertown, S.D., from injuries received in a motor vehicle accident.

She was born Jan. 16, 1930, in Waterloo, daughter of Christ and Eulah Foster Petersen. She married Earl R. Hankins Sr. on May 20, 1950, in a double wedding in Waterloo. He preceded her in death May 1, 2004.

She was a foster parent for more than 40 years, and she was very involved in the Fraternal Order of Eagles. She was family oriented and loved her family dearly, especially the grandchildren. She was known as Grandma Great by her grandchildren.

Survived by six sons, Michael (Diana) of Geneseo, Ill., Randy (Judy) of Crystal Lake, Ill., Rodney of Lenexa, Kan., Earl Jr. (fiance, Carrie) of Waterloo, Mikell, serving with the U.S. Navy, and Clint (Marilyn) of Cedar Falls; four daughters, Debra (Mike) Overmann of Cedar Falls, Roxanne Hemmer and Tammy Balvanz, both of Waterloo, and Tena (Brad) Lindgren of Loretto, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and seven stepgrandchildren.

Preceded in death by her husband; a son-in-law, Tom Hemmer; and a brother, Richard Petersen.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, with inurnment in the Garden of Memories, both in Waterloo. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at Parrott and Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service, Waterloo, where there will be a 2 p.m. Fraternal Order of Eagles memorial service. Visitation also for an hour before services Monday at the church.

A memorial fund will be established at a later date.
