LA PORTE CITY - Mary "Maxine" Runyan, 85, of La Porte City, died Tuesday, Nov. 6, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, following a short illness.

She was born Oct. 4, 1922, in Benton County, daughter of Clate and Netta Hitt Sheffler. She married Rolland Runyan on April 6, 1940, in Independence. He died Sept. 27, 1978.

Mrs. Runyan worked 20 years for local fertilizer and chemical plants.

Survivors include two sons, Ronald and Dennis (Rebecca) Runyan, both of La Porte City; two daughters, Carol (Shannon) Emberton of Anamosa and Joyce Chrisinger of Coralville; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by two daughters-in-law, Diane and Judy Runyan; and three sisters, Helen Thiele Hartong, Mildred Kuhn and Lucille Porter.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Paul United Methodist Church, with burial in the West View Cemetery, both in La Porte City. Public visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Huisman Funeral Home, La Porte City, and for an hour before services Friday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to La Porte City Fire and Rescue and the La Porte City Ag Museum.
