Mary H. Stephenson

Mrs. E. G. (Mary H.) Stephenson, 82, of 428 S. 3rd Ave. W., a resident of Newton for 57 years, died Saturday morning, June 1, at the Heritage Manor Care Center. Cremation was held.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 4, at the congregational United Church of Christ.

The Rev. David Raymond, pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery.

Reese funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Memorial contributions to the Congregational United Church of Christ or the America Heart Association may be left at the funeral home.

Survivors are two sons, Robert S. of Enid, Okla., and John A. of New Ulm, Minn.; a daughter, Mrs. Raymond (Mary Ellen) McBride of Waterloo; and four grandchildren, who were raised in the Stephenson home, Susan L. Hege of Columbia, Mo., Jane E. Harner of Shakapee, Minn., John D. Stephenson of Des Moines and James A. Stephenson of Oklahoma City, Okla.

Also surviving are three other grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. E. L. (Gladys) Nelson of Newton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a grandson and a sister.

Mrs. Stephenson was a member of the Congregational United church of Christ, was active in various women’s groups of the church, Kiwanis Queens and Clio Club, had been very active in the Parent-Teacher Association, and was active in the Civil Air Patrol during World War II.

She had been a teacher in Grinnell and a clerk at the Maytag Co. in the 1940’s.

The daughter of John and Margaret Murray Shand, she was born May 30, 1903 in Crary, N.D.

She was married Aug. 18, 1924.
