WATERLOO - Waterloo Police Chief Frank J. Bemisdarfer (retired), 81, of Grinnell, formerly of 707 Newton St., Waterloo, died Tuesday, July 26, 2005, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

He was born April 8, 1924, in Ottumwa, son of Frank and Violet Burtlow Bemisdarfer. He married Dorothy Knode Feb. 5, 1949, in Mason City. She died Sept. 8, 2003.

He entered law enforcement in June 1949 and rose through the ranks, becoming detective in June 1960, lieutenant in June 1969, captain in June 1971, chief in June 1978 and retired in July 1980.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theatre and was a member of the State and International Chief of Police Association.

Survived by a son, Craig (Sharon) of Grinnell; a daughter, Linda (Richard) Phillips of Cedar Falls; five grandchildren, Brian Bemisdarfer, Scott Bemisdarfer, Jason Phillips, Andrea Phillips and Angela Graham; and two great-grandchildren, Kylee and Breann Phillips.

Preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy; and a sister, Wanda Francis.

Graveside services: 11 a.m. Saturday at the Garden of Memories Cemetery, followed by inurnment. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 138 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1623. There will be no visitation. Locke Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to the Cedar Valley Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
