WATERLOO - Stephen Matthew Hogan, 54, of New York City, formerly of Waterloo, died Aug. 4, 2007, at St. Luke's Hospital, New York City.

He was born July 20, 1953, in Waterloo, son of Ben and Doris Weber Hogan.

He graduated from Columbus High School in 1971 and the University of Iowa with a degree in languages.

After graduation, he lived and worked in Tokyo, Japan, for five years. Following his return to the U.S., he made his home in New York City where he was a freelance writer translator until his death.

Survived by his parents of Waterloo; his partner, Martin Skolnik of Tamarac, Fla.; three sisters, Mary Ann Hogan and Jane Roethler, both of San Diego, and Ellen Giuliani of Milford, Mass.; four brothers, Brian (Debbie) of Waterloo, Joe (Mary) and David (Sue), both of San Diego and John of New York City; 10 nieces and nephews; several aunts and uncles; and a host of relatives and friends.

Preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Edward and Anna Weber; and paternal grandparents, Joseph and Violetta Hogan.

Memorial services: 11 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with inurnment in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Public visitation for an hour before services Thursday at the church. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street is in charge of arrangements.
