[Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, Sunday, December 1, 2013]

Irene Kathryn McMurray Sandkamp passed away peacefully on the morning of Nov. 18, 2013, after a long struggle with COPD.

She was born Dec. 1, 1920 in Des Moines, the fourth of five children.

Irene spent her senior year of high school in a country school near Aurora.

A boy noticed this new student, and as Bill, her husband explained, "She was the prettiest girl I had ever seen. I managed to sit next to her and make her life miserable the rest of the year. By the end of the school year, we were holding hands."

Bill and Irene were married Feb. 9, 1942 and continued "holding hands" for the next sixty-seven years, until Bill's passing.

Irene retired from Allen Hospital [Waterloo] in 1985 after 27 years of service, that began in 1958. She was head of the X-ray department and taught X-ray technology to young men and women. During her retirement years, she was visited often by past students, who remembered her as strict but caring, and who knew they received the best education possible because of Irene's traits.

During their early retirement years, Irene and Bill would travel on their Honda Gold Wing visiting many states and National Parks.

Bowling and Card Groups occupied Irene's time once the Gold Wing was put away.

Bill and Irene moved to Windcove, in the Western Home Communities, in 2004.

Irene survived by a loving son, Ron and his wife Carolyn, her grandson Drew and wife Lisa, her granddaughter Erin and husband Dan, three great-granddaughters, and one great-great-grandson, and one sister.

A private family burial service was held Saturday, Nov. 23.

She will be remembered in our hearts forever.
