WATERLOO, IOWA - Elizabeth Jane Olson, 99, of Waterloo, died Aug. 22, 2013, at The Landing at Friendship Village.

She was born Sept. 6, 1913, in Brigham City, Utah, the daughter of Ono Burr and Edna Earle Cummens Emerson. She married Gust Olson Jr. in Cedar Falls on Sept. 19, 1946; he preceded her in death.

Mrs. Olson graduated from Christian College (now Columbia College), Columbia, Mo., with an associate’s degree in music education in 1932, and from Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI) with a bachelor's degree in music in 1938. She taught elementary music at Newton and Hansell, before becoming personnel director at Lawther Hall in 1945 and then director of Bartlett Hall (both at UNI). She was a member of Sigma Alpha Iota, Waterloo Ladies Musical Improvement Club and PEO Chapter IX.

Survived by a son, Gust III (Hope) of Milwaukee; a daughter, Christina Mae (Michelle) of Arcadia, Wis.; a grandson, Matthew of Vancouver, British Columbia; and many other grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren from her husband’s first marriage; and many nieces and nephews and their children.

Preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers.

Her body was donated to the University of Iowa Carver College Of Medicine. Family gatherings celebrated her life in lieu of a memorial service.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Lakeview Lodge and The Landing at Friendship Village for the excellent care Elizabeth received. Donations in Elizabeth’s name may be made to the Friendship Village Auxiliary.
