CEDAR FALLS -- George W. Latta, 96, of Windhaven Assisted Living Center of the Cedar Falls Western Home Communities, formerly of Sun City Center, Fla., died at the center Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013.

He was born Dec. 4, 1916, in Logan, son of Walter and Amelda Carson Latta. He married Elaine Marie Hummel on June 25, 1943, in Davenport; she died in 2004.

Mr. Latta graduated from Logan High School and received his master’s degree from the University of Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II in India. He was the principal at Frank L. Smart Junior High, Davenport, and at Walcott Elementary and Junior High School.

Survived by two daughters, Catherine (Mark) Meyerhoff of Waterloo and Susan (Duane) Wince of Cedar Falls; two sons, David (Kathleen) of Waterloo and Robert of Owings Mills, Md.; and six grandchildren, Nathan Meyerhoff, Megan Meyerhoff, Christopher (Allyson) Latta, Elizabeth (Brent) Brunsen, Sean Latta and Zachary Latta.

Preceded in death by a brother, Maurice; a sister, Eva Henninger; and a daughter-in-law, Donna Latta.

Inurnment: will take place in Logan Cemetery, Logan. His body has been cremated. Arrangements by Locke Funeral Home Inc.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Falls Western Home Foundation or Cedar Valley Hospice.
