Waterloo, Iowa - Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday for Peter Woodring, 94, Civil War Veteran who died at his home here Sunday. Woodring, a member of the Thirty-seventh Illinois infantry, fought at the siege of Vicksburg and was wounded during the siege of Mobile. As a boy of 14 he heard Lincoln and Douglas debate at Freeport, Illinois.

PETER WOODRING
DIED SUNDAY

Peter Woodring the last Civil War veteran in Waterloo, passed away at his home at 1021 Randolph Street. Waterloo, Iowa Sunday afternoon. Funeral services will be held at Kearn's Garden Chapel Wednesday afternoon.

Funeral services for Peter Woodring, 94, former Waverly resident, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Kearns' Garden Chapel, Waterloo. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Waterloo.

Mr. Woodring, one of four brothers who fought in the Union armies during the Civil War and one of two surviving veterans in Waterloo, died at 11:45 p.m. Sunda at his home of a breakdown due to advanced age.

Officiating at the funeral will be Rev. Lew C. Harris, pastor of Central Church of Christ, assisted by Rev. Albert L. Drake, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Waterloo.

Woodring's death leaves Henry Bray, 94, of 425 Bratnober Street, as Waterloo's sole remaining veteran of the Civil War.

Peter Woodring was born near Easton, Pa., October 27, 1844 the son of Peter and Elizabeth Woodring, who came six years later to Cedarville, Ill., bringing their family to the new home.

When he was 14, he walked six miles from Cedarville to Freeport to hear one of the famous Lincoln Douglas debates.

After the war, Woodring came to Waverly, Ia., to live, learning the cabinet maker's trade with his brothers, Frank and Henry.

He married Mary Jane Fague in Waverly on May 18, 1868. The couple then lived in Clarksville, Sumner, Oelwein and Waverly for many years, moving to Waterloo in April 1914, and located in the present home, where they have since resided.

Mrs. Woodring died Jan. 3, 1937. After moving to Waterloo he opened a furniture repair business, which he continued to 1930. For many years he kept up his hobby of "caning chairs."

He was a member of the United Brethren Chruch in Christ. He was always active in G. A. R. circle and was a past commander of Griffith post at Oelwein.

He is survived by two sons and five daughters: W. H. Woodring, W. C. Woodring and Frank Woodring, Waverly, and James Woodring, Janesville are nephews of the deceased.

Woodring Groups in Double Wedding Anniversary Events

The sixty-fifth wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Woodring, 1021 Randolph Street; and the fortieth wedding date of their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. A. I. Woodring, 429 Denver Street, will be celebratd at a family gathering at the home of the former Thursday evening.

Mr. and Mrs. Peter Woodring have had 10 children, seven of whom are living. Five children attending tonight's celebration will be A. L. Woodring, Mrs. J. W. Nelson of Independence, Mrs. C. B. Biggle and Mrs. Nora Croy and Miss Ada Woodring at home. Children unable to attend are Mrs. D. B. Miller, Joplin, Mo., and H. E. Woodring, San Francisco, Cal.

Husbands and wives of the children, and grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Woodring will also be present.

Refreshments will be served by Mrs. Croy and Miss Woodring.

Mr. Peter Woodring is 88 years of age and Mrs. Woodring is 85. Both enjoy fair health.
