CEDAR FALLS - Eleanor Bernice Close, 94, of Cedar Falls, formerly of Waterloo, died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013, at Sartori Memorial Hospital of natural causes.

She was born Aug. 21, 1919, in Iowa County, daughter of James Calvin and Bernice Fern Fry Hartz. She married William Frederick Close Jr. on Nov. 1, 1941, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua; he died Sept. 19, 2003.

Mrs. Close graduated from Hilton High School, Conroy, and Iowa State Teachers College with an elementary teaching certificate. She taught in rural schools in Iowa County, and for 25 years in the Waterloo Community School District at Roosevelt and Lincoln Elementary Schools. After retirement she was a Golden Apple Volunteer in Waterloo schools. She was a member of Chapter Z, PEO, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International for Key Women Educators, Sartori Hospital Auxiliary, and Trinity Episcopal Parish, where she served on the vestry and chaired the Altar Guild for many years.

Survived by two daughters, Sue Ellen (Robert) Savereide and Ann Close, both of Cedar Falls; a son, William F. III (Jane) of New Hartford; six grandchildren, Marshall (Cindy) Close of Polk City, James (Kerry) Savereide of Fairbanks, Alaska, Carrie (Paul) Hassel of Glenwood Springs, Colo., Megann (Jason) Tresemer of Cedar Falls, Ed Close of Penuluma, Calif., and Adelle Close of Waterloo; and nine great-grandchildren, Zackary Savereide, Riley Close, Molly Close, Dylan Savereide, Owen Tresemer, Will Hassel, Alexa Zanders, Norah Tresemer and Eva Hassel.

Preceded in death by two brothers, Maurice and James Hartz.

Memorial services: 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Episcopal Parish, Waterloo, where the family will greet friends for an hour before the service. Inurnment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Waterloo. Locke Funeral Home, Waterloo, assisted the family.
