RAYMOND - Shirley A. Schaefer, 75, of Raymond, died Friday, Nov. 15, 2013, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo.

She was born Oct. 4, 1938, in Winneshiek County, at Plymouth Rock, daughter of Orlando and Dolores Uhlenhake Solem. On Feb. 15, 1958, she married Franklin Leo “Pete” Schaefer at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Cedar Falls. He preceded her in death.

Mrs. Schaefer graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic High School, Waterloo. She was employed by Farmers State Bank, Waterloo, as branch manager of the Raymond office. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Raymond, Catholic Daughters of the Americas in Jesup, Catholic Order of Foresters in Gilbertville, and the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association.

Survived by a son, Craig (Mary Kay) of Waterloo; three daughters, Anne (Scott) Sergeant of Waterloo, Connie (Scott) Smith of Jesup and Carolyn “Kari” (Mike) Lahey of Sherrill; 11 grandchildren, Brooke (Richard) Prestegard of Bricelyn, Minn., Jared Sergeant of Sioux Falls, S.D., Danielle (Dustin) Thorson of Jesup, Joshua Smith of Fairbanks, Alaska, Byron Sergeant, Melissa Schmit, Emily Schaefer, Abby Schaefer and Elizabeth Schaefer, all of Waterloo, Blake (Melissa) Schmit of Gilbertville and Megan Schmit of Sherrill; nine great-grandchildren, Hayden and Hudson Prestegard, Grace and Camille Thorson, Maddox Thorson, Spring Smith, and Ian, Alexis and Phillip Schmit; her mother, Dolores Simmons of Cedar Falls; a sister, Janice Spears (Gus) Pflugmacker of Springfield, Ill.; and a brother, Larry Simmons of Onalaska, Texas.

Preceded in death by her father; her stepfather, John Simmons; an infant son, Mark Joseph; and a brother-in-law, Gary Spears.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with burial in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, both in Gilbertville. Visitation from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at White Funeral Home, Jesup, with a 4 p.m. rosary by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and the Catholic Order of Foresters, and a 6 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also an hour before services Wednesday at the church.

Memorials will be directed to St. Joseph Catholic Church in Raymond, and to the Bosco System in Gilbertville.
