Word has been received that Clarence Smelser, 26, of 327½ Dane Street, died at 7:40 a.m. Wednesday of carcinoma in Des Moines Veterans Hosptial.

He was born may 1, 1924, in Waterloo, the son of Jessie and Elsie Smelser.

Educated in West Waterloo public schools. He served in the army signal corps in the Aleutian Islands during World War II.

In 1946 he married Patricia Callahan in Waterloo.

Survivors are his mother at 2235 Grand Avenue; his wife; one son, Joel; three brothers, William, Hudson; Eugene, 629 Newton Street, and Melvin, in the navy at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; and one sister, Mrs. Genevieve Fairbanks, 530 Power Street.

He was preceded in death by his father.

The body will be brought to Waterloo Thursday.
