CEDAR FALLS - Darrell Grinnell, 93, of NewAldaya Lifescapes, Cedar Falls, formerly of Waterloo and Hudson, died Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013, at Sartori Memorial Hospital of natural causes.

He was born Aug. 8, 1920, in Dunkerton, son of Joe and Mabel Herman Grinnell. He married Helen Nye on Nov. 1, 1941, in Kahoka, Mo.; she died Sept. 10, 1988. He married Jean Taylor on June 19, 1998.

He graduated from Dunkerton High School in 1938, Iowa State Teachers College in 1947, and received his master's degree from Drake University in educational administration. He served in the military as a special agent with the U.S. Army Counter Intelligence Corps. Mr. Grinnell was the principal at Readlyn and Orange high schools; then superintendent of Orange Township School District. Later, he was personnel director for the Waterloo Community School District and then associate superintendent of the school district, retiring in 1983. He was a member of Community Church of Hudson.

Survived by his wife, of Cedar Falls; four sons, Jon (Geraldine) Grinnell of Denver, Jeffrey (Shirley) Grinnell of Emerald Hills, Calif., Joe Grinnell of Cedar Falls and James (Judy) Taylor of Littleton, Colo.; a daughter, Sandi (David) Rogers of La Porte City; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial services: 3 p.m. Wednesday at Community Church of Hudson, with private family burial. Visitation will be for an hour before services Wednesday at the church. Locke Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
