WATERLOO - Joan E. Shuberg-Seyffer, 53, of 100 Home Park Blvd., Waterloo, died Thursday, June 15, 2006, following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Joan was born on March 23, 1953, in Storm Lake, to Alden and Dorothy Franseen. She grew up in Spencer and graduated from Spencer High School in 1971. Following high school she attended Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo, graduating with an associates degree in interior design in 1973. On March 27, 1977, she married Kevin Shuberg in Sioux Rapids. Together they had three children, Sam, Ben and Heidi. They lived in Wyoming for 10 years. In 1987 they moved to Cherokee, and later divorced.

Joan was actively involved with many things in Cherokee. She worked at Cherokee State Bank while she pursued a nursing degree at Western Iowa Tech Community College. After graduating in May of 1995 she was employed by Buena Vista County Hospital and Careage Hills Nursing Center. She also owned and operated Stephens Dry Cleaning. Joan especially enjoyed being a mother and participating in many social clubs including TTT, BPW and a fun crochet club known as the Happy Hookers.

In 2000 she moved to Cedar Falls where she continued her nursing career at Allen Hospital. In 2003 she took a job at Friendship Village Retirement Center. On March 4, 2005, she was married to Daryl Seyffer at the Friendship Village Chapel. Daryl and Joanie have enjoyed many things together, such as riding with the bike club, going to art festivals, and especially listening to live music.

She is survived by her husband; three children, Samuel Shuberg and his special friend Lisa Malaney, and her daughter, Kaitlyn, of Ixonia, Wis., Benjamin Shuberg and his wife Emily of Cherokee, and Heidi Shuberg of Waterloo; two stepdaughters, Angie Rieck and her husband Jon of Gladstone, Mo., and Amy Seyffer of Moline, Ill.; her parents, Alden and Dorothy Franseen of Spencer; a sister, Linda Ball and her husband Jim of Lincoln, Neb.; a brother, Brian Franseen and his wife Anji of Spencer; a brother-in-law, Bob Regenitter of Spencer; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Bowers and her husband Gene of Hudson, Jeanne Montenier and her husband Red of Washburn; one stepgrandchild, Elsie Rieck; many nieces and nephews and lots of friends.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Barb Regenitter in 1985.

Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Thursday, June 22, in the chapel of Friendship Village Retirement Center in Waterloo. The Rev. Mike Campbell, chaplain of Cedar Valley Hospice, will officiate. A visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the North Lawn Cemetery, Spencer.
