WATERLOO - William Anthony Schmitt, 73, of Waterloo, died at home Wednesday, June 14, 2006, of prostrate cancer.

He was born May 28, 1933, in Dubuque, son of William Paul and Hazel Maro Schmitt. He married Donna Laird in Cuba City, Wis.

Mr. Schmitt attended Iowa State University, Ames, graduating with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. He also served two years in the U.S. Army. He worked at John Deere Product Engineering in both Dubuque and Waterloo, retiring in 1993 after 36 years with the company.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Cindy Schmitt of St. Louis, Mo., and Carol Schmitt of Waterloo; four sons, William (Carmon) of Suwanee, Ga., Bob (Kathryn) of Albuquerque, N. M., Dan (Jennifer) of Naples, Fla., and Dru (Deborah) of Boca Raton, Fla.; his mother of Dubuque; 15 grandchildren; two brothers, John (Wanda) of Dubuque and Steve (Patti) of Bettendorf; and two sisters: Mary Ann (Ken) Bradley of Epworth and Kathy (Alvin) Pothoff of Dubuque.

Preceded in death by a sister, Bonnie Loney.

Celebration of Life services: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at John Deere Supervisor's Club on DeWitt Road, off West Ridgeway Avenue. There will be no visitation, his body was cremated. Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice of Waterloo.
