Leora A. Kepple was born on November 26, 1910, in Greene, Butler County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Charles and Barbara (Kirsch) Hurd.
Leora attended country school, graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in Greene and later attended Gates College in Waterloo.
She married Claire Kepple on Feburary 25, 1935. This union was blessed with two children, Robert and Rita.
They lived in Waterloo for 11 years when Claire worked at John Deere, before moving back to the family farm in Greene. Leora opened a ceramic studio with her friend Muriel Schwartz and taught ceramics and painting for 25 years.
After retirement in 1975 the couple traveled the country in their motor home. They went to Canada for the summers where Claire was a guide on Lac de Mille Lac. Leora was very proud of winning a Walleye Fishing contest where she received a large trophy and $500. They wintered in Texas for 20+ years. They were married 71 years when Claire died on September 7, 2006.
Leora was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas at St. Mary in Greene and a member of St. Rita's Circle.
Leora died on Tuesday, July 7, 2009, at the Liebe Care Center in Greene.
Leora is survived by her children: Bob (Swanie) Kepple and Rita (Bob) Barth all of Greene; 9 grandchildren: Mike (Lois) Kepple of Greene, Kelly (Al) Zweck of Greene, Kayleen (Jason) Landers of Greene, Rhonda Perry and friend Bob Schwickerath of Charles City, Boyd (Shawn)Barth of Grand Blanc, MI, Brenda (Todd) Medenwaldt, Denise (Chris) Nenninger of St. Louis,MO, April (Shawn) Grant of Colleyville, TX and Nicole (Erik) Graham of St. Louis, MO; 15 great grandchildren; one sister: Katherine Schuknecht of Greene; 2 sisters-in-law: Margaret Hurd of Nashua and Virginia Moline of Arizona; one brother-in-law: Clark (Irene) Kepple of Ionia; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Claire; her parents; one sister: Grace; two brothers: Lester and Oscar(Gladys) Hurd; daughter in law, Linda; grandson-in-law, Fred Perry; two brothers-in-law, Galen Schuknecht and Raymond Moline.
A Funeral Mass for Leora A. Kepple, 98, of Greene, was held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 9, 2009, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Greene with Rev. Msgr. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial is in St. Mary Cemetery, Greene.
Visitation was 4-8 p.m., Wednesday, July 8, 2009, at Reid's Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St. Greene, where there was a Rosary Service at 7 pm. Visitation was at the church one hour before services on Thursday.
