[Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, Sunday, June 12, 2005]

WATERLOO - Sally Anne McKenna, 71, formerly of Waterloo, died Monday, May 16, 2005, at her sons home in Newark, N.J., of congestive heart failure.

She was born Nov. 18, 1933, in Larchmont, N.Y., daughter of Francis Patrick and Mary Glenn Kenny. She grew up in Palm Beach, Fla., before joining the Navy as a W.A.V.E. While in the Navy she met and married Sidney F. McKenna, a native of Waterloo.

They moved to Waterloo where Sid joined National Studios, a family-owned portrait studio, and later started McKenna Professional Imaging on Falls Avenue. She resided in Waterloo from 1957 until moving to Arizona in 1979. During her 22 years in Waterloo, she was active with Junior League, Sunnyside Country Club and St. Edwards Parish. She was also owner of Crickets Closet Boutique on West Fourth Street in the mid-1970s.

As a retired home health aide for Catholic Charities, Sally touched the lives of many sick, elderly and less fortunate people. She made a habit of collecting unwanted household items from everyone she met and would later redistribute those items to needy clients, often enlisting the help of her children to deliver items and to make repairs to their homes. Known for her quick wit and love of conversation and good wine, she had a spirit that touched the lives of many and will be greatly missed. At her request, she spent the last month of her life in New Jersey enjoying the spring garden, an occasional glass of wine and the love and care of her children.

Survived by five children, Shannon McKenna Stiner of Fresno, Calif., Kelly McKenna of Phoenix, Ariz., Jamie McKenna Caan of West Palm Beach, Fla., Megan McKenna of Tempe, Ariz., and Sean McKenna of Newark, N.J.; and five grandchildren.

In keeping with Sallys interest in the environment and human progress, her body was donated to Science Care Anatomical; an organization dedicated to medical research and education. A private family memorial will take place at a later date and her ashes will be scattered in the Atlantic Ocean near her childhood home of Palm Beach, Fla.

Sally was a passionate supporter of the arts and enjoyed collecting the work of young artists. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that tax-deductible gifts be made in Sallys name to the Arizona State University School for the Arts Step Gallery (Mail Code 1505, Tempe, AZ 85287-1505)
