Betty Beck Uris McGill, 83, of Seal Beach, Calif, died at home June 8, 2005, of cancer.

She was born in Maquoketa, daughter of Svend and Frederika Beck

She graduated form. Orange Township High School and attended Gates Business College in Waterloo. In 1943 she joined the U.S. Marine Corps and was stationed at Hunter College in New York, and served as a Staff Sergeant at the San Francisco Marine base where she met and married Leon Uris.

She is survived by her present husband of 36 years, Frank R. McGill, a World War II veteran of the U.S. 8th Air Force; a daughter, Karen Duffy (Matthew) of San Diego; two sons, Mark Uris (Patricia) of Arvada, Colo, and Michael Uris and wife of Redondo Beach, Calif; two granddaughters. Shannon and Brittany Uris, both of Arvada; a brother, Robert Beck (Jean) of Cedar Falls; and a sister, Joan Sindlinger (William) of Waterloo.
