Elwin D. Kean, 86, of Cedar Falls, died Saturday, August 29, 2009, at his home in Cedar Falls.

He was born April 17, 1923 in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of George and Nellie (Scott) Kean. Elwin married Lois J. Pipho on April 18, 1953 at Maxfield Lutheran Church near Denver, Iowa. Elwin was a graduate of Sioux City Central High School and served with the United States Coast Guard during WW II. He received his BA degree from the University of Iowa and his MA degree from the University of Northern Iowa. Elwin was a Division Credit Manager at Rath Packing Company in Waterloo, retiring in 1984 after thirty-five years of service. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls, Waterloo AMVETS Post 19, The Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, and a former member of Chapter 145 Cedar Valley Mended Hearts.

Survivors include his wife, Lois, of Cedar Falls; a son, Michael Kean, of Austin, Texas, a daughter, Barbara Kean, of Marion, Iowa, and two grandchildren, Alexander M. Kean and Rachel N. Kean.

Elwin was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, John, Donald, William and Kenneth Kean, and three sisters, Violet Lind, Mary Cheschire and Katherine Brouillette.

Services will be 11:00 am Wednesday, September 2, 2009, at St. John Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls, with burial at Fairview Cemetery in Waterloo. Visitation will be 6—8:00 pm Tuesday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, and one hour before service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the church or Beacon of Hope Hospice.
