WATERLOO - Gladys Evelyn Bartels, 93, of Waterloo, died at home Sunday, Oct. 6, 2013, of natural causes.

She was born Sept. 27, 1920, in Elma, daughter of Frederick and Amelia Anderlik Lauck. She married Leonard Bartels on June 16, 1943; he preceded her in death.

Mrs. Bartels graduated from Riceville High School in 1938, and from Upper Iowa University with a Normal Training Teacher’s Certificate. She taught in rural school until her marriage, when she became a housewife. She and her husband also owned several rental properties. She was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Waterloo.

Survived by four sons, Dean (Carol) and Allen (Connie), both of Waterloo, Wayne of Phoenix and Gary (Marcia) of Lingo, Ariz.; two daughters, Rosalene (George) Schumacher of Waterloo and Carolyn (David) McAnally of LaVista, Neb.; seven grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Preceded in death by a grandson; and three sisters, Leota Lubbert, Violia Miller and Leona Arndt.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service, and for an hour before services Thursday at the church.
