WATERLOO - Duane Joseph Hanig, 76, of Waterloo, died Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

He was born Sept. 19, 1932, in Ackley, son of Joseph and Helen Arndorfer Hanig. He married Inez Mattie Marshall on June 16, 1956, at St. John Catholic Church, Clarion.

He graduated from Ackley High School in 1950 and served in the Army during the Korean War. Mr. Hanig worked at John Deere Credit Union (now Veridian) for 23 years as a loan officer as well as Public Loan and the Anniston Army Depot Federal Credit Union.

He was a longtime parishioner of Sacred Heart Church and served as president of the first parish council.

Survived by his wife; two daughters, Jolene Hanig-Jones (Bob) of Bridgeville, Pa., and Sandra of Northampton, Mass.; two sons, Jeff (Lori) of Sugar Land, Texas, and Tom (Kathy) of Papillion, Neb.; four grandchildren, Chelsey, Carolyn, Ben and Justin; two sisters, Majorie Kampman of Dumont and Norma (Joe Diano) Henderson of Florence, Ariz.; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Daryl Marshall, Maxine Spencer, Betty and Richard Fibikar, Marilyn Marshall, Theresa and Carl Hollebrands, Kay Marshall, Mary Ann and Al Gathman and Phyllis and Daryl Zwiefel; and many nephews and nieces.

Preceded in death by his parents; his wife's parents, H. Ralph and Alla Ethel Marshall; brothers-in-law, Harvey Kampman, Andy Anderson, Miles Henderson, Robert and Rush Marshall and Gene Spencer; and a sister-in-law, Juanita Marshall.

Services: 10 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial at 1:30 p.m. in Evergreen Cemetery, Clarion. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also for an hour before services Saturday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the Ackley Veterans' Memorial, Sacred Heart Catholic Church or Cedar Valley Hospice.

Duane was very proud of his family, faith and serving his country and his community. He was a good husband and father who enjoyed traveling, reading and singing.
