Max Guernsey, 88, of Waterloo, died Saturday, March 26, 2005, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

He was born Feb. 19, 1917, in Minburn, son of Solon D. and Mary Slocum Guernsey. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific. He graduated from East Waterloo High School. He married Helen Wynkoop Nov. 27, 1935.

Max was a Realtor, developer and was creator of Cap'n Max Chocolates.

Max is survived by his wife, Helen; a son, Max Guernsey Jr. and his wife Christin of Rio Rancho, N.M.; two daughters, Sandra Rada-Aleff and husband Jerry Aleff of Waverly and Sharon Gambetty of Sun City West, Ariz.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, DeWayne and wife Jeanette Guernsey of Waterloo and Byron and companion Lil of Sun City, Ariz.; and three sisters, Bonnie Sellers of New Orleans, Beulah Edwards and Olive Davis of Seal Beach, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial celebration of life services: 10 a.m. Monday at Cedar Valley Community Church (note change in location). Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, where the family will receive friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Arboretum and Botanic Gardens or Cedar Valley Hospice.
