Mrs. Josephine Barrett, 73, of Washington. D. C., a former Wa terloo resident, died at 7:10 p. m. Sunday at Presbyterian Hospital where she had been a resident since Aug. 23. She died as the result of a stroke a week previous to her entrance into the hospital. She suffered the stroke while visiting at the home of a friend, Mrs. George Call, 710 West Ninth Street. She was en route from Washington to San Francisco, Cal., at the time of her visit here.
Born Josephine Gilliland on Feb. 3, 1873, in Springfield, Ill, the daughter of John B. and Sara Haden Britt Gilliland. She was married to Elmer E. Barrett in March 1894. In 1904 they came to Burlington, Ia., and in 1911 to Waterloo. Her husband died here in 1920, and in 1929, she left Waterloo to reside with her only child, Mrs. Jan E. Bonner, in various Iowa cities, including Des Moines.
Five years ago she moved to Washington to reside with a sister, Mrs. G. T. Barksdale. She was a member of the Church of Christ here and of the Capital City Church of Christ in Washington.
One sister, one brother, her parents, and her husband preceded her in death.
Her only survivors were her daughter and sister.
The body is at Locke Funeral Home.
