WATERLOO - James L. “Jim” “Smokey” Boesen, 82, of Waterloo, died Monday, Sept. 16, 2013, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.
He was born Aug. 7, 1931, in Waterloo, son of Howard and Catharine Fettes Boesen. He married Phyllis J. Schauer on April 24, 1954, in Waterloo.
Mr. Boesen retired from the City of Waterloo as the Heating and Air Conditioning Inspector in 1995. He continued his employment with the city until his death as a starter at Gates Park Golf Course.
Survived by his wife; four sons, Mark (Nancy), David (Robin) and Brian, all of Waterloo, and Craig of Gilbert, Ariz.; a daughter, Ann (Rob) Zajac of Park Ridge, Ill.; 10 grandchildren, Joseph Zubak, Sara Davis, James Boesen, Amanda Byersdorfer, Michelle Boesen, Daniel Boesen, Kerry Boesen, Nicholas Boesen, Thomas Zajac and Jaimee Zajac; four great-grandchildren, with one on the way; a brother, Bob (Betty) of Waterloo; three sisters, Mary Ellen (Bob) Hadachek of Dysart, and Pat (John) Van Dorn and Barbara (Duane) Schafer, both of Waterloo; and a sister-in-law, Beverly Boesen of Waterloo.
Preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, William “Bill.”
Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, with a 7 p.m. vigil, and for an hour before services, all at the church. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street is in charge of the arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the church or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
Jim loved golf and being with his family and grandchildren. He especially loved attending his grandkids sporting events. He and Phyllis celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary this year.
