Ernie S. Smock, 58, of Independence, died Saturday, Feb. 18, 2006, at University of Wisconsin Hospital, Madison, Wis.

He was born Nov. 20, 1947, in Waterloo, son of Francis "Smokie" David and Dorcas Adah Chittendon Smock. He married Deloris Mae Straw March 2, 1967, in El Paso, Texas.

He graduated from Independence High School in 1966 and served with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Mr. Smock was a mechanic at John Deere Co., Waterloo, retiring in 1996. He was an Independence City Councilman for the first ward for 10 years.

Survived by his wife; two sons, Byron (Jennifer) of La Porte City and Patrick (Heather) of Galesville, Wis.; a grandson; his parents of Independence; four brothers, Mike (Sandi), Sam (Sheri) and Fred (Terri), all of Independence, and Jeff (Justine Straw) of Manchester; and six sisters, Judy (Carl) Wyant of Evansdale, Karen (Steve) Wood of Walcott, Janice (Abe) Miller of Washington, Sandy (Rick) Henderson of Meriden, Lori (Roger) Thompson of Davenport and Jenny (Tim) Hewlett of San Antonio, Texas.

Preceded in death by a grandson.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday at White Funeral Home, with burial in Mount Hope Cemetery, both in Independence. Friends may call after 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, and from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, where there will be a 7 p.m. military service.
