WATERLOO - John M. "Big John" Gavigan, 60 of 123 E Parker St., died at home Tuesday, Feb. 6, 1996, of a heart attack.

He was born June 29, 1935, in Waterloo, son of Francis and Anne Schoenfisch Gavigan. He married Anna May Carney on April 6, 1959, in Cedar Falls. They were later divorced.

Mr. Gavigan was employed in the pickle cellar department at Rath Packing Co. and later was employed with Deere & Co. He was known as "Big John", a disc jockey for radio station KXEL

Survived by five sons: Donald, Robert, Brian and Kevin, all of Waterloo, and Richard of Cedar Falls; two daughters, Nancy Gavigan and Susan James both of Waterloo; five grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Thomas of Waterloo; and three sisters: Elizabeth Jacobsen, Barbara Fleshner and Mary Anderson all of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by his parents Waterloo.

Services were 10 a.m. today at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. O'Keefe & Towne-Grarup & Waychoff Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements

Memorials may be directed to St. Mary's Catholic Church or St. Mary's Villa.
