Mrs. Saunders is Called at Colorado Springs

DEATH OF MRS. SAUNDERS

A telegram received here this morning by Rev. A. A. Tanner brings the first news of the death of Selina Sauuders, widow of the late H. H. Saunders, who was at one time postmaster of Waterloo.

The telegram is brief, stating only that death occurred yesterday and that the remains would arrive over the Illinois Central at 2 p.m. tomorrow. At first it was thought that the funeral could be held later tomorrow afternoon at the Congregational church, but it has been decided to hold the services Saturday, the hour to be announced tomorrow. Death occurred at Colorado Springs, Col., where deceased and her daughter, Miss Ora, went for their health the latter part of last August.

Deceased had been a sufferer for a long time with lung trouble and her death resulted from this. For several weeks past it had been known that her condition was serious though the physicians had hoped to prolong life until spring when weather would be more favorable for her. Last Monday a telegram was received by her son, Roger, and he left for the Springs immediately, probably arriving there before his mother's death.

Mrs. Saunders resided on West Fifth Street for a number of years, but sold the place last summer. She and Miss Ora then went to Colorado Springs, renting a large house and subletting such rooms as they did not need.

Decedent was about 57 years of age. Her husband died of cancer about seven years ago and was buried in Elmwood. The oldest son died about the same time and of the family only the daughter, Ora, and the son, Roger, remain. Deceased was a member of the Congregational Church.

The Congregational church was completely filled yesterday afternoon at the funeral services held over the remains of the late Mrs. Seiina P. Saunders, prior to the burial at Elmwood. Fitting music was rendered by the choir of the church and the pastor, Rev. A. A. Tanner, spoke comfortingly concerning 'the joys of the hereafter as compared with the sufferings of the present" In closing he gave a brief sketch of Mrs. Saunder's life as follows:

Mrs. Seiina P. Saunders was born at Tecumseh, Mich., the year of her birth being 1846*. In 1855 her parents, Mr. and Mrs. N. C. Rice, moved with their family to Iowa and made their home near Traer. Miss Rice's marriage to Mr. Halsey H. Saunders occurred in 1873 at Waterloo, where she had for some time been a teacher in the public schools. Their married life was a sweet and happy one, though saddened in its closing months by the husband's painful and protracted illness. Tenderly was he cared for by the wife, who has now followed him to the unseen land.

Two of their children have gone before them, an infant daughter and a son. Another daughter, Miss Ora, and another son, Roger S., survive them. Mrs. Saunders leaves also a sister, Mrs. Dora M. Percy of Sioux City, la., and two brothers, J. C. Rice of Mankato, Minn., and H. C. Rice of Dysart, la. Besides these there are those in this church, of which she has long been a consistent and valued member, and in this community, where her sterling worth and kindliness are widely known, numbered friends who mourn her loss.
