[Waterloo Courier, Wednesday, April 15, 1885, Waterloo, Iowa]

DIED.—James Hill died at his residence in this city last Thursday afternoon, aged about 41 years, of lung fever, after an illness of only about a week. He had been engaged gathering cream and on the Tuesday of the week previous to his death, was out as usual on his trip. That night he was taken sick and grew rapidly worse until his death.

He had been married only about four months and leaves a widow, and three boys by a former wife.

Deceased was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Elam Hill. He was born in La Grange Co., Ind., and came to Waterloo with his parents in the fall of 1853.

When the war broke out he enlisted in Co. G, 9th Iowa Vol. Infantry, under Capt. Washburn. In the second year of the war he was prostrated by a sun stroke and lay in the hospital at St. Louis for some time before he was able to come home. After his recovery be responded to the call for 100-days men and after serving out the term of his enlistment he joined a cavalry regiment and was sent west where he served until the close of the war. He then returned to Waterloo, where he has made his home since.

The funeral services were held last Saturday afternoon from the First Baptist Church, Rev. R. Garten officiating and a large audience including the members of Rob't Anderson Post, G. A. II., being present to show their respect for the deceased.
