[Waterloo Evening Courier, Saturday, June 28, 1924, Waterloo, Iowa]

MRS. ISAAC REED, 91 YEARS OF AGE, CALLED BY DEATH

WAS BORN IN SCOTLAND AND CAME TO IOWA IN 1865: IN WATERLOO 25 YEARS.

Mrs. Catherine Reed, widow of Isaac Reed, Sr., died at 5 a.m. today at the home of a son, Joseph Reed, 412 Dawson Street, where she had made her home since last December. She was in her ninety-second year. She had been bedfast only a week, but while living in her home at 920 Fairview Avenue last December she suffered a slight stroke while alone. When discovered by a neighbor she had managed to get partially in bed. It was not known how long she lay on the floor after being stricken.

Mrs. Reed made a remarkable recovery from that illness in view of her age, but her strength in the past few months had been gradually failing.

Mrs. Reed, whose maiden name was Catherine McGuire, was born nearly 92 years ago in Paisley, Scotland, once renowned for the Paisley shawls manufactured there. Her father was a weaver of these shawls which were commonly worn by women 50 to 150 years ago. When a little girl 3 or 4 years old her parents brought her to America, stopping at Montreal, Canada for a short time. That was about 1836, before the day of ocean liners. Their trip across the Atlantic required nine weeks in a sailing vessel.

After a few months in Canada the family moved to Utica, N. Y., and it was there about 70 years ago, that Miss McGuire married Isaac Reed, a native of Utica. Mr. Reed took his bride to Stephenson County, Ill., settling 16 miles from Freeport. In the fall of 1865 the Reed family moved to Black Hawk County [Iowa], settling on a farm of 200 acres at the south edge of the present town of Dewar. They continued to live there until 25 years ago when the parents moved to Waterloo, living first in a home on Lafayette Street and later on Fairview Avenue.

Mr. Reed died nine years ago, in his eighty-sixth year.

Decedent was the mother of nine sons, three of whom survive here. They are: F. E. Reed, eldest of the family, and Joseph, Waterloo, and Isaac, living on a farm east of St. Francis Hospital in East Waterloo Township. Twenty two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive. Mrs. Reed was the last survivor of her immediate family. Of the five sons who preceded their mother in death Isaac died in infancy. Later another son born to her was given the same name, which also was the name of the father. Robert was six when died, Charles was 11, and James and William also deceased, were grown to manhood.

Mrs. Reed was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

Services will be at 9 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. St. Joseph's Rosary society will meet at the home at 4 p.m. Sunday.
