[Iowa State Reporter, Thursday, December 10, 1885, Waterloo, Iowa]

The La Porte City Progress, in a notice of the death of Joseph Howery, of Spring Creek Township, which occurred on the 26th ult., says:

"Mr. Howery had lived so long in Spring Creek township in this county, and was so well and so favorably known that he was universally known as Uncle Jo.

Mr. Howery was born March 26th, 1799, in old Virginia. His parents moved from his native state while he was but fifteen years old to Shelby county, Indiana. At the age of twenty-three years he was married to Miss Lodema Kinsley, who now survives him. His next move was to Randolph County, in the same state, where they lived until he moved to this county in the year 1885. His settlement in this county was on the same farm on which he died.

Sixteen children were born to them, nine of whom are living, five daughters and four sons, all the heads of families. Mr. Howery had twenty-four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, all living."
