OLD AGE CLAIMS DUE

GRANDMA HOWREY PASSES AWAY AFTER NEAR CENTURY OF ACTIVE LIFE

Probably Oldest Person in Blackhawk County, Being Ninety-Eight years old.

La Porte City Progress: The oldest person in Spring Creek township and probably in Black Hawk County was Mrs. L. Howrey, mother of Calvan Howrey, who passed away Wednesday afternoon about 3:00 o'clock, death being due to no particular ailment, only old age claiming its due.

Until about a month ago her health was good and with her bright mind and clear memory she has reviewed incidents of her long and eventful life, which it was a pleasure to hear. It had been a fond hope of her children that she might round out the century in her earthly career.

Grandma Howrey, the subject of this sketch, was born a little less than five years after the birth of Abraham Lincoln. Her maiden name was Lodenia Kinshey and she was born near Niagara Falls, NY, Jan 17, 1813, and this year she celebrated her 97th birthday. With her parents she was among the pioneers of Indiana where she was married to Joseph Howrey.

The couple came to Spring Creek Township, this county, in 1856, where Grandma Howrey has lived continuously with the exception of a short residence in La Porte City. Her husband died twenty-four years ago. They reared a large family of children, most of whom are still living, the mother having made her home with her son Salvin (Calvin) Howrey. She was among the few remaining of that type of sturdy pioneers who blazed the path to better things, and at the age of 97 she was able to tell with interest of the events that transpired in the early half and middle of the last century. She passed through many of the scenes and incidents before the civil war, and suffered the hardships during and following the war.

Funeral services will held from the home of her son, Calvin Howrey, Friday morning at 11:00 o'clock. The interment will be at the Spring Creek Cemetery.

Lodema and Joseph were married on October 2, 1828 in Shelby Co., IN. Thirteen children were born to this union.
