Chase Alan Winkey, age 29, of Denver, Colo., formerly of Ames, died in a diving accident on Makwa Lake BWCA on Aug. 7, 2013. A gathering of friends and family will be 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, at Oakwood Road Church, 2400 Oakwood Road, Ames, Iowa, with a 3 p.m. Tuesday funeral service.
Chase was born June 20, 1984, in Waterloo, the son of Nick Winkey and Shelli (Campbell) Mullins. Chase brought smiles and laughs to every situation. Chase was a three time all state soccer player at Ames High and a phenomenal defense back on Ames High Football Team graduating in 2002. He attended Grossmont College in San Diego and Iowa State University. He enjoyed studying human nature. Chase worked with Aramark in Denver, Colo.
Chase is survived by his parents, Shelli (Marc) Mullins, of Lenexa, Kan., Nick Winkey of Des Moines, stepfather Casey (Kim) Hayes of Overland Park, Kan.; brother, Brandon and sister-in-law Melissa Winkey and niece and nephews, Alexis, Jackson, Benton and Braxton, all of Ames; sister, Tyler Kiriakos of Louisberg, Kan.; stepbrother, Josh Luyet Hayes of Overland Park, Kan.; grandparents, Kent and Sue Ellen Campbell of Branson, Mo., Martha and John Gilbert of Mountain Home, Ark., Terry Winkey of Cedar Falls and Gwen and Jerry Hayes of Atlantic; aunts, Teri Lynn (Michelle) Winkey and Sherri Krouse of Gilbert, Ariz., uncles, Troy Campbell of Mountain Home, Ark., and Bryan (Diane) Hayes of Atlantic; and cousins.
Chase was preceded in death by his grandmother, Connie Winkey, and uncle David Krouse, who he has joined in heaven.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Ames Boy’s High School Soccer or The Chase Winkey Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) Scholarship.
