WATERLOO—Rev. Elwyn L. Bierie, 84, of Bull Shoals, Ark., formerly of Waterloo, died Saturday, April 25, 1998, at Baxter County Regional Hospital, Mountain Home, Ark., of natural causes.
He was born Aug. 27, 1913, in Readlyn, son of Fred L. and Irene Clabby Bierie. He graduated from Loras College, Dubuque, and completed his theological studies at the University of Innsbruck, Austria. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1938 at Trinity Church, Innsburg. He served as associate pastor at St. John the Baptist Parish, Peosta, from 1938-39, and St. Mary Parish, Dubuque, 1939-41; administrator of St. John Parish, Coggon, 1941-43; chaplain in the U.S. Army 35th Infantry Division, 1943-46; pastor of St. Peter Parish, Sabuola, 1946-49; professor of religion and medical ethics at school of nursing; and chaplain of Mercy Health Center, Dubuque, 1949-51.
The Rev. Bierie rejoined the U.S. Army as chaplain in 1951, and retired from active duty in 1975, with the rank of colonel.
Survived by a brother, Thomas of Hampton, Va.; and a sister, Margaret French of Bull Shoals.
Preceded in death by two sisters, Lucille Mount and Genevieve Pearson.
Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church, Bull Shoals, with visitation until 5 p.m. today at Roller Funeral Home, Bull Shoals. Additional services: 10 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery, both in Waterloo. Full military rites will be conducted.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service, South Street, where there will be a 7:30 p.m. rosary. Visitation also for an hour before services Saturday at the church.Memorials may be directed to Our Lady of the Assumption Trappist Abbey, Ava; Mo. or St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Yellville, Ark.
