CHILD OF SEVEN KILLED BY AUTO
Seven-year-old Marjorie Germann daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Germann, of 2216 Fourth Street West died of a fractured skull at 4:20 o'clock yesterday afternoon within ten minutes after having been struck by an automobile driven by Harold G. Nesbit of 839 Third Avenue West in company with Adrian Wiley, a motor car demonstrator of 132 Maple Street.
The accident occurred on Fourth Street near Clough Street as the little girl was going to a grocery store with her six-year-old playmate, Dorothy Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. N. C. Smith, of 2327 Fourth Street.
Young Nesbit, who was graduated from west high in 1913, and his companion at once reported the accident to police headquarters and were released by order of Coroner Sidney Smith. They explained that the two children were walking along behind a wagon driven by Dorothy's uncle, Arthur Smith, and were hidden from view from the automobile which was approaching the city from the southwest.
"I had my clutch out after reaching the top of the hill," said Mr. Nesbit, who was visibly unnerved by the accident, "and the machine was coasting quite rapidly. I turned out to pass the wagon and as we were passing the little girl ran from behind the wagon directly in front of the car. I threw on my brake and Wiley applied the emergency brake and we stopped as quickly as possible."
Mr. Nesbit assisted neighbors to carry the unconscious child into the home of Fred L. Northey, 210 Kingbard Avenue, while Mr. Wiley summoned medical aid. The child was dead before the physician arrived and a fractured skull was given as the cause.
She was a pupil at the Whittier school. and was an almost inseparable companion of the little Smith girl. In addition to her parents she is survived by her sister, Violet, age 13 years.
Rev. Carroll P. Harbor will conduct funeral services for seven-year-old Marjorie Germaun, who died soon after being struck by an automobile, at the United Brethren Church Sunday morning at 9 o'clock. Interment will be Sunday afternoon at Cedar Falls.
