Lynn Marie Thornberry, 57, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, died Tuesday, August 24, 2004, at her home after a courageous battle of 4 years, 8 months with cancer.

Lynn was born in Hazel Green, Wisconsin on March 16, 1947, daughter of Irvin and Marilyn (Adams) Gerlich. She grew up in Galena Illinois and later moved to West Des Moines where she graduated from Valley High School. On September 30, 1966, she married Stanley Thornberry in Waterloo Iowa.

Lynn attended the University of Iowa in 1965-66, Elgin Community College, where she earned Associate’s degree in Nursing (RN) in 1979 and the University of Iowa, where she earned her BSN in 1992. She was in the masters program at Allen Hospital School of Nursing when she was diagnosed in early 2000. Over her nursing career, she worked at various hospitals, including McHenry Community Hospital (McHenry IL), Froedert (Milwaukee WI), Des Moines Methodist, Covenant (Waterloo) and People’s Clinic (Waterloo). Lynn was a member of several social and philanthropic groups currently, PEO, MV Chapter, “We wear purple now” book club and Cedar Valley Herb Club. She served and was devoted to others throughout her life, through her personal efforts, her career and her church. She was a member of the Prairie Springs Methodist Church where she participated on administrative committees. She had a love of life. She enjoyed her family, was an energetic quilter and enjoyed gardening, reading, skiing and travel.

Survivors include her husband, Stanley, of Cedar Falls, a daughter Ann Stutler (Darin) of Urbandale, Iowa, a son Curtis Nepstad-Thornberry (Tina) of Panora Iowa, two grandchildren, Axel and Emma, her mother, Marilyn Gerlich, a brother Jay Gerlich (Karen) of Panora and sisters, Jule Reynolds (Ted) of Des Moines and Lonna Nauman (Kevin) of Panora.

Preceded in death by her father, Irvin Gerlich, infant sister, Laura, and her maternal and paternal grandparents.

A Celebration of Life ceremony was held at 1st United Methodist Church, Cedar Falls Iowa at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 27, 2004. There will be a private inurnment.
