Douglas Keith, longtime Hudson businessman, passed away June 18, 1993 at 10:00 noon of complications of Alzheimer's disease at the Grundy Care Center, Grundy Center, at the age of 64.
Doug was born February 28, 1929 at Traer, Iowa, the son of David and Margaret Keith. He married Beverly Schoonover in 1952 at Fredericksburg, Iowa.
He graduated from Hudson High School in 1946. Following graduation he was employed at Phil Rosemond Ford in Hudson. At the age of 22 he and his father purchased the Ford dealership and Doug continued as its manager for the next 32 years. After selling the business to Bill Colwell in 1984, he continued working there until his retirement in 1986.
Doug was a member of the Community Church where he was a member of the building committee for the new sanctuary. He was a member of Builders Lodge here, and later a member of Coin Lodge AF&AM at Reinbeck. He had served the lodge in several offices and also was a past Worshipful Master. He served three terms on the Hudson City Council; was a member of Hadco, Inc., the developers of the Country Manor Addition to the city of Hudson. Doug was active in almost every community project and was instrumental in helping move and restore the old depot to its present spot and worked alongside others as they worked to establish the local historical museum.
Doug was a charter member of the "Jolly Wagon Boys,: in Hudson which consisted of a group of local men who met once a month in each other's homes to "roast" a fellow colleague. This group of men was featured not only in the local paper, but the Waterloo Courier, the Des Moines Register and the Kansas City daily paper when they were pictured beside the "Leaning Silo of Hudson," at the Frank Brandhorst farm. Along with fellowship among frineds Doug enjoyed restoring old cars, fishing and square dancing until his heal begane to fail in 1986.
Doug is survived by his wife, two daughters, Shelly Merrill, of Williamsburg, Michigan, and Stacey Layne of Hudson; one grandson, Benjamin Layne of Hudson; and a sister, Charlotte Bolton of Nisswa, Minnesota; also five nieces and nephews including Tom Keith who so lovingly helped care for his uncle Doug during his lengthy illness.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Dave & Margaret, and two brothers, Bernard and Thomas.
