WATERLOO — Gary R. Nelson, 74, of Slidell, La., formerly of Waterloo, died Sunday, July 21, 2013 at Ochsner Medical Center Northshore, Slidell.

He was born Sept. 28, 1938, in Waterloo, son of Raymond E. and Dorothy H. Hennagir Nelson. He married Jo Ann Marie Leistikow on July 25, 1959, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Waterloo.

Mr. Nelson graduated from the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, in 1966, and began a career in the defense industry, proceeding from department manager to director/vice president, in engineering and/or international marketing positions at several companies for the next 50-plus years, most recently at Textron Marine & Land Systems, New Orleans and Slidell.

Survived by his wife; a daughter, Lisa (Michael) Langcake of Fort Mill, S.C.; two sons, Eric (Kathleen) of Thorndale, Pa., and Bradley (Michelle) of Elizabethtown, Pa.; a grandson, Jack; two sisters, Linda (Bob) Thauer of Anaheim, Calif., and Kathy Burris of Augusta, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents; and a nephew.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Edward’s Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also an hour before services Tuesday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to St. Jude Shrine, Baltimore, Md.; Wounded Warrior Project, Jacksonville, Fla.; Habitat For Humanity; Feed The Hungry.

The family would like to thank the ER and ICU staffs of Ochsner Northshore for their intense and valiant efforts in doing their very best for our beloved husband, father and grandfather during his last two days.
