LA PORTE CITY — Susan Lea Loeb, 63, of La Porte City, died Saturday, July 27, 2013, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, of cancer.
She was born Sept. 11, 1949, at Allen Hospital, Waterloo, daughter of George and Betty Belle Monroe Horsman. She married Jim Loeb.
She graduated from La Porte City High School in 1967. As a 14-year-old she worked as a nurse’s aid in Vinton. She continued her interest in nursing and attended Allen School of Nursing, obtaining her registered nurse degree and later her bachelor’s. Mrs. Loeb started working as the director of nursing at Sunnycrest Care Center, Dysart, later becoming administrator. She transferred to Crestview Acres, Marion, as administrator and then to Lutheran Home, Cedar Falls. She and her friend, Becky Rowe, established Care Initiatives Hospice. She also taught nursing classes at Kirkwood College, Allen School of Nursing and Hawkeye Community College.
Survived by her husband of La Porte City; three sons, Thad (Justina) of West Des Moines, Clint (fiancee, Seraysa Mundt) of Garrison, and Zach (Ashlie) of La Porte City; a daughter, Julie (Luke) Merfeld of Dubuque; her mother of La Porte City; and 12 grandchildren.
Preceded in death by her father; and a sister, Pam.
Services: 10:30 am. Wednesday, at Zion Lutheran Jubilee Church, with burial at a later date in Zion Lutheran Jubilee Cemetery, both in rural La Porte City. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Overton Funeral Home, Dysart.
