GILBERTVILLE - Willard F. "Bill" Delagardelle, 90, died Monday, March 30, at Covenant Medical Center. He was born Sept. 19, 1918, in Gilbertville, son of Frank and Pauline Federspiel Delagardelle. He married Mary Schmitz on Aug. 20, 1946. She died April 12, 1968. He then married Helen Weires on May 2, 1981.

Mr. Delagardelle farmed in rural Jesup until retiring in 1981. He was a past member of the Bosco System School Board; past councilman for the city of Gilbertville; and past director of Farmers Mutual Telephone Co. in Jesup. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Order of Foresters and had served in World War II from 1941 to 1945 in the U.S. Army.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, David (Mary) Delagardelle of Ames and Bill (Diane) Delagardelle of San Diego; four daughters, Julie (David) Kessens of Unionville, Mo., Karen Helm and Lisa (Bob) Lamb, both of Waterloo, and Paula (Scott) Vandenbos of Gilbertville; a stepson, Jim (Sue) Weires of Ames; a daughter-in-law, Julie Delagardelle of Shell Rock; 15 grandchildren, Joshua (Stacie) Weires, Larken Amador, Wendy (Kevin) Kirchner, Stacey Harris, Erica Kessens (Justin Smith), Kelly Delagardelle, Jennifer (Harry) Libby, Jason (SunShine) Delagardelle, Michelle (Jeff) Webb, Shawn (Tim) Craigo, Chad Helm, Katie Delagardelle, Hallie Delagardelle, Megan Vandenbos and Jacob Vandenbos; 11 great-grandchildren, Harrison Weires, Marlee Weires, Benjamin Amador, Kayla Kirchner, Kami Kirchner, Hope Harris, Jordan Harris, Nicholas Craigo, Amelia Craigo, Brody Smith, Cole Smith, Rachel Libby and Amber Libby; six brothers, Leo, Tom (Shirley), Paul and Clem (Kay), all of Gilbertville, Irvin (Donna) and Norman (Linda), both of Jesup; seven sisters, Alma Schares of Gilbertville, Betty (Joe) Youngblut and Joan (LeRoy) Schmit, both of Jesup, Dorothy (Warren) Waddell, Delores (Ted) Even and Mary (Dick) Schmitz, all of Waterloo, and Wilma (Tom) Mullen of La Porte City.

He was preceded in death by a son, Fred; a son-in-law, Leonard Helm; brothers, John (Joan) and Joe; a sister, Esther Delagardelle; a brother-in-law, Francis Schares; and a sister-in-law, Irma Delagardelle.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, both in Gilbertville. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, Waterloo, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil. Full military rites will be conducted at the grave by Nugent-Demuth American Legion Post 714 of Gilbertville. Visitation also for an hour before services at the church on Thursday.

Memorials may be directed to the Bosco System or the church.

Willard was an avid bowler with the Farmers League Bowling team and was also a huge supporter of the Chicago Cubs.
