WATERLOO — Russell DeBerg, 91, of Lenexa, Kan., formerly of Waterloo, died Tuesday, July 23, 2013, at Kansas City Hospice House.

He was born Oct. 14, 1921, in Aplington, son of John and Bertha Knavel DeBerg. He married Geneva Welter on June 26, 1948 at St. John’s Catholic Church, Waterloo.

Mr. DeBerg graduated from East High School in 1939 and attended Navy Machinist School at the Navy Training School at Ford Motor Company. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1941-1947 aboard the USS Hornet and USS Chincoteague in the South Pacific as a Motor Machinists Mate First Class. He worked for North American Car Corporation in Sioux Falls, S.D., and Chicago Ridge, Ill., for 30 years. He then worked as plant manager for Flying Tigers Airline in Superior, Wis. and Kansas City. He retired in 1983.

Survived by his wife; two daughters, Carol Jane (Glenn) Barnett of Atlanta, and Cynthia Jean (Richard) Michalowicz of Lockport, Ill.; a son, Scott Russell (Shelly) of Shawnee, Kan.; five grandchildren, Dana (Mark) McMurray, Daniel and Andrew Michalowicz, and Kyle and Kayla DeBerg; and two great-granddaughters, Lila Carol McMurray and Harper Glenn McMurray.

Preceded in death by three brothers Ray, Gerald and Donald DeBerg.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery and military rites by Cedar Falls Amvets Post No. 49. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Lock Funeral Home.
