WATERLOO — Catherine “Kay” Ann Doyle Sinnwell, 90, of Waterloo, passed away peacefully Friday, July 12, 2013, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home.
Kay was born Feb. 19, 1923, in Pittston, Pa., daughter of Francis & Anna Joyce Doyle. She graduated in 1941, moving to Washington D.C. to work in the Navy Department during WWII. While there, she met Leo Sinnwell and they were married on Aug. 16, 1945. Together they moved to Iowa in the late 1940s to be closer to family. In addition to raising ten children, Kay was a care giver to many friends and neighbors.
Leo preceded her in death in 1972. She modeled strength, optimism and perseverance to her children and all who knew her. She was an active member of the St. John’s Parish family and was an avid sports fan and enjoyed cheering on her favorite teams. She loved being with her grandchildren and hearing about their many endeavors.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, John and Jerry; a granddaughter, Star; a daughter-in-law, Sue; and a sister, Alice.
She is survived by three daughters, Susan Joyce of Fairfax, Va., Mary Ellen Sinnwell of Fort Collins, Colo. and Patty Sinnwell of Waterloo; five sons, Tom of Burke, Va., Alan (Joanna) and Bill (Sue) all of Greeley, Colo., Gary and Mark (Beth) all of Waterloo; 11 grandchildren, Chrissy (Eric) Armstrong, Shannon Appleton, Steven (Suzanne), Kristal, Catherine (Peter) Gerlach, Michael (Elise), Joe, Hannah, Lauren, Bailey and Alissa Sinnwell; and two great-grandchildren, Olivia and Devin Armstrong.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Public visitation will be 3-8 p.m. Monday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, where there will be a 4 p.m. Legion Of Mary rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil. Visitation will also be held for an hour before services at the church on Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cedar Valley Catholic Schools, Cedar Valley Hospice or to the family.
