Services for Clifford J. Gates, 77, of 519 Cottage St.. will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Salvation Army Citadel with burial in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence. He died Thursday morning at Allen Memorial Hospital.

He was born Jan. 7, 1907, at Independence, son of Henry and Gertrude Chesley Gates. He married Elsie Belle Loy Feb. 14, 1927, at Independence. She died in 1981. He worked in the hog kill at Rath Packing Co. for 40 years before retiring in 1970.

He is survived by eight sons: Clifford Jr., Kenneth, Ronald, Larry and Dennis, all of Waterloo, Donald of Cedar Falls, LaVerae of Lynden, Wash., and G.W. Bill of Minneapolis; five daughters: Betty Engelhardt, Barbara Davis, Sally Gates and Karen Moore, all of Waterloo, and Joan Hanley of St. Petersburg, Fla.; three brothers: Donald of Reinbeck, Earl of California and Jackie Leefluer of Woodward; a sister, Gladys Howey of Guthrie Center; and 62 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at Kearns-Dykeman Chapel from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. to noon Monday and at the citadel for an hour before services.

A memorial has been established by the family.
