[Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, Thursday, November 19, 2006]

Thomas J. Burke, 74, of Storrs, Conn., died peacefully at home on Nov. 8, 2006, due to complications of a stroke.

Tom was born on Aug. 9, 1932, to the late James S. and Esther (Pagel) Burke of Cannon Falls, Minn.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Irene C. (Davis) Burke; their three daughters and their families: Jocelyn (Burke) and Alex B. Callis, and their children Katherine A. and Thomas A. of Tolland, Conn.; Hilary P. (Burke) and Daniel French and their daughter Lauren D. of Canaan, Vt.; and Melissa K. Burke of Willington, Conn. Tom is also survived by his uncle, Robert and wife Lillian Pagel of Cannon Falls, and his nieces Rose (Terwedo) Johnson of Lester Prairie, Minn., Betty (Terwedo) Althaus of Waterloo, and cousin Donald Pagel of Green Bay, Wis. Tom enjoyed an extended family and friends in Iowa, Minnesota, New Mexico and Wisconsin, including Robert and Betty Boesen of Waterloo.

Tom was predeceased by his stepbrother, Earl Terwedo of Waterloo, his sister, Shirley (Burke) Holleman of Albuquerque, M.N., and his infant granddaughter, Maureen B. French.

A talented football player at West High School in Waterloo, Tom delayed college to serve with honor in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War in the 1950s. He was then commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserves. He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Colorado in Boulder, and his master's degree from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa. He retired as Registrar of the University of Connecticut in 1992, having had a distinguished career in higher education at both UConn and Temple. Tom enjoyed listening to UConn basketball games and having morning coffee with close friends, but his greatest joy was his family - "Pop-Pop" will be greatly missed at family gatherings.

At Tom's request a memorial service will be held in Cannon Falls in spring 2007.

Memorial donations may be made in Tom's memory to: Hospice of Eastern CT/VNA East, 34 Ledgebrook Drive, Mansfield Center, CT 06250. Tolland Memorial Funeral Home, Tolland, is assisting the family with arrangements.
