DIES EARLY TODAY

Civil War Veteran and Father of
County Engineer Succumbs at Home Here

Dorman Steele Johnston, 82, Civil war veteran, father of County Engineer W. D. Johnston, and a resident of Black Hawk County 54 years, died at 5 a.m. today at his home, 321 High Street, death being dure to ailments of advanced age.

He was sticken Wednesday and remained in a state of semiconsciousness until death. He had resided at the present family home since he retired from the farm in East Waterloo Township in 1901.

Born May 30, 1842, at Newfane, Niagara County, New York, Mr. Johnston enlisted for the Civil war from that county under Col. Ellsworth in Co. G. Seventh N.Y. volunteer cavalry on Sept. 3, 1861. He served until the end of the term of enlistment and was mustered out with his company with an honorable record.

He returned to his home at Newfane to care for his aged mother. On Feb. 17, 1864, he was married at Sommerset, N. Y. to Miss Carrie Peacock. They lived on a farm in Niagara until 1871 when they took Greeley's advice and went west, coming direct to Waterloo. Mr. Johnston settled on a farm in East Waterloo Township and for the next 30 years was one of the sterling agriculturists of the county. He served his township and community in several official capacities.

In 1901, Mr. Johnson retired from the farm and built a home for his family at 321 High Street and had resided there since.

Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Johnston, six sons and five daughters. Surviving are the widow and these children: John D., Wardell D., Melburn J., and Mrs. Truman Aldrich, all of Waterloo; Mrs. Henry Elliott, Muskegon, Mich., and Lewis H., Brockport, N. Y. A brother, Willis H., Appleton, N. Y. also survives. There are 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Mr. Johnston for many years was an active member of Robert Anderson post, G. A. R., and was a familar figure at Memorial hall gatherings. His birthday being May 30, Memorial Day had a double significance and its observance was a notable event of each year for him.

Until funeral arrangements are completed, the body will be at Hileman & Gindt's Undertaking Parlors. The G. A. R. post will be in charge of the rites.

Tribute Thursday
to D. S. Johnston

Funeral services for Dorman S. Johnston, Civil war veteran and longtime resident of Black Hawk County, were attended by a large assembly of army comrades, members of the patriotic auxiliaries, and friends that crowded Universallst church at 3 p.m. Thursday. A prayer service at the Hileman & Gindt chapel was attended by members of the family and intimate friends.

Members of Robert Anderson post, G. A. R. and the Woman's Relief corps conducted the ritualistic rites and placed a silken flag on the breast of the dead soldier.

Rev. W. O. Bodell led in prayer and Effie McCullom Jones, a former pastor, delivered the eulogy. At the grave in Falrvlew, a squad of Spanish-American war veterans fired a farewell salute and a bugler sounded "taps."

50th Anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. Dorman S. Johnston, residing at 321 High Street, who today observe their 50th wedding anniversary, will receive their friends tonight in Elks hall between the hours of 7:30 and 10 o'clock.

Dorman S. Johnston, whose age is now 71 years, was married in Niagara County, New York, Feb. 17, 1864, to Miss Carolina Peacock. Her age is now 68 years. They settled on a farm there where they resided until the year 1871 when they took Horace Greeley's advice and came west, locating in Waterloo.

They purchased a farm in East Waterloo Township and lived there for thirty years when they came to Waterloo to live.

The family consists of five boys and two girls: Louis H. Johnston, of Brockport, New York, Mrs. Mary Elliott, Los Angeles, Calif., John E. Johnston, Waterloo, Wardell D. Johnston, Waterloo, James Garfield Johnston, Waterloo, Melbourn J. Johnston, Waterloo, Mrs. Carrie T. Aldrich, of Woodruff, Wisconsin. There are fourteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mr. Johnston was a soldier in the Civil war, enlisting in 1861 in Company G. Seventh New York Volunteer cavalry. The whole regiment was honorably discharged in 1862 with the privilege of re-enlisting in some other branch of the service.
