Lydia E. Winter

Lydia was born May 22, 1909 to Carl Paul and Louisa Lydia (Marihart) Busse and baptized at the Littleton Presbyterian Church. She attended a rural grade school in the Otterville, Iowa area. She attended High School in Independence, Iowa and graduated in 1926 with a normal training certificate. She taught in a country school north of Oelwein until her marriage to Charles Aaron Winter May 22, 1929, in Oelwein. They moved to a farm near Maynard, Iowa, and remained members of Oelwein Presbyterian church. Their two children Francis Joe and Katherine Louisa were born in that home.

During the years 1936-1943 they lived on farms near Arlington Iowa, and in 1943 they purchased a farm a mile north of Wadena, Iowa where they carried on a business as Dairy farmers with a herd of registered Guernsey's. They transferred their church membership to Wadena Presbyterian church at this time. Here they remained until Charles's death on October 21, 1974. Lydia continued to live on the farm until the fall of 1989 when she moved to Laurinda Drive in Cedar Falls and became a member of Cedar Heights Presbyterian Church. In 1999 Lydia took up residence in Western Homes in Cedar Falls and remained a resident there until her death October 25, 2005.

Lydia was a very active churchwoman all her life. She was a Sunday school teacher, Youth leader, Presbyterian Deacon, and active in women's work. She was also involved in 4H leadership, but among all these activities, the deepest commitment of her life was to her family as wife and mother.

She is survived by her son, Francis Joe (Dorothy) Winter of Waterloo; daughter, Katherine Louisa (Frank) Whaley of Fayetteville, NC; four grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband; and sisters, Myrthe Winter and Ruth Brockman.
