CEDAR FALLS - Services for Dr. Emerson C. Denny, 96, of the Western Home, formerly of 1007 W. Seventh St., will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church, with burial in Fairview Cemetery. The longtime educator died Thursday at the Western Home.

He was born Aug. 15, 1887, at Bellview, Ind., son of John J. and Effa Haines Denny. He married
Blanche Blackburn Aug. 22, 1917, in Hudson, Ind. She died March 4, 1968.

He was an emerit professor education at the University of Northern Iowa. Denny was known throughout the nation for his publishedtests, most notably the Denny-Nelson American History Test for
grades 7 and 8, first published by the World Book Co. in 1929, and the Nelson-Denny Reading Test, first published by Houghton-Mifflin Co. in 1930. He was a teacher, school principal and superintendent in rural schools in Indiana, taught at colleges in Indiana and Kentucky, was head of the Education Department at Teachers College in Lewiston, Idaho, and joined the faculty at UNI as an assistant professor of education in 1923.

Denny was named professor of education in 1924, and headed the Department of Education from 1934-49, after which he returned to teaching full time. He retired in 1955, becoming an emeritus professor, and continued teaching on a part-time basis until 1967.

Surviving are a son, John B. Denny of 2012 Maplewood Drive; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother, Dr. James W. Denny of Indianapolis.

Friends may call at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home until 9 p.m. Sunday and for an hour before services at the church Monday.
