WATERLOO — James David Dean, 89, of Waterloo, died Thursday, June 13, 2013, at Covenant Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 26, 1924, in Greenwood, S.C., son of James and Dora Kates Dean. He married Betty Reynolds on Aug. 30, 1945, in Omaha, Neb. She died Nov. 14, 1986.

He served in the U.S. Army with the military police until 1952. Mr. Dean was employed with Wonder Bread Bakery for 35 years, retiring May 6, 1984. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans.

Survived by three sons: Lyle (Lei) of Dunkerton, Terrance (Vicki) of Des Moines and Richard (Kathy Hilby) of Waterloo; a daughter, Julie (Jimmy) Myer of Dows; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ethel Louise Swisher of Detroit.

Preceded in death by four brothers, Carlton, Palmer, Lee and Fred.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted by Waterloo AMVETS Post 19 and Evansdale AMVETS Post 31. Visitation from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, where there will be a 2 p.m. Legion of Mary rosary. Visitation also for an hour before services Monday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family or Cedar Valley Catholic Schools.
