RAYMOND — John A. Freese, 58, of Raymond, died Monday, June 17, 2013. at Cedar Valley Hospice, Waterloo, of cancer.

He was born Jan. 31, 1955, in Marshalltown. He married Theresa Gerholdt on Sept. 12, 1981, in Waterloo.

Mr. Freese served as a judge for the Iowa High School Rodeo and was inducted into the Iowa High School Rodeo Hall of Fame. He raised miniature cattle and quarter horses and had served as chief of the Raymond Fire Department. He was a member of St. Joseph Parish, Raymond.

Survived by his wife; three sons, Jonathan (Samantha) of Phenix City, Ala., Justin of Raymond and Jacob (Amanda) of Waterloo; two grandchildren; his father, Bernard Freese of Vinton; two sisters, Brenda Hackbarth of Vinton and Laura (Eric) Morine of Lamont; two brothers, Dan (Brenda McGurk) of Walford and Bernard Jr. (Sue) of Naperville, Ill.; a brother-in-law, Bob Hanisch of Northfield, Minn.; and a sister-in-law, Deanna Freese-Miller of Norway.

Preceded in death by his mother, Juanetia Freese; two sisters, Carol Hanisch and Nancy Freese; and a brother, Tom.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Gilbertville, with burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, Raymond. Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, Vinton, with a 3:45 p.m. rosary.
