[Waterloo Daily Courier, Monday, May 11, 1896]

Mrs. Sarah Adeline Caldwell, age 79 years, died at the home of her son, C. W. Caldwell, at 1002 Lafayette Street, at 7:15 Saturday evening. Death ensued as a result of old age and a general wasting away.

Since the death of her husband last fall Mrs. Caldwell has been gradually nearing the grave and ten weeks ago she was obliged to take to her bed.

Mrs. Caldwell's maiden name was Sarah Adeline Parsons. She was born in Palmyra, K Y., Feb. 13, 1816. She was the youngest and longest survivor of a family of six children, all of whom lived to old age. She was of genuine revolutionary descent. Her grandfather, Major Edward Crafts, was born in Boston, Mass., in 1746. The house in which he was born still remains standing, and is now, Nos. 79 and 81 Salem Street, having been recently visited by a friend of the family. He commanded a company of artillery in the Revolutionary War, and the two cannons used by his company today adorn the summit of Bunker Hill monument. A brother of Maj. Crafts was colonel of a regiment of artillery through the entire struggle for national independence, and both these men were intimate friends of President John Adams, who had said of them, "They were noble men, who, while they did not pretend to be fine gentlemen, were honest, industrious, God-fearing men, who went to the polls as they went to church, and who never hesitated to draw their swords in the cause of right."

Deceased was married to C. C. [Charles C.] Caldwell in the pleasant village of Chatham, Medina County, Ohio, on the evening of Nov. 30, 1837, Rev. Ansell Brainard officiating. Nov. 30, 1887, the golden wedding was celebrated in this city.

The fruit of the union in marriage was six children. Two sons died in childhood and one daughter died at the age of twenty-three, having been married at seventeen to Mr. Leonard Woodard.

The other children, three sons, survive her. Two, C. W. [Charles] and J. D. [James], are residents of this city and are prominent business men. The third, Judge E. P Caldwell, resides at Minneapolis. The husband of the deceased preceded her to the great beyond last fall.

The funeral occurred from the residence at 3 o'clock this afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. F. Pitner, of Grace M. E. church, and was largely attended. The body was interred in Fairview Cemetery.

Note: The daughter who died at 23 was Mary Rosella Caldwell Woodard, wife of Leonard B. Woodard. Jan. 1841- Aug 1964. Mary died August 3, 1864, leaving a little baby girl. The baby daughter died at the age of eight months.
