WATERLOO - John W. Dodge III, 90, of Waterloo, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008, at Windsor Care Center, Cedar Falls.

He was born Aug. 7, 1917, in Chicago, son of John W. II and Gertrude Bernard Dodge. He married Joann C. Scheinost on Sept. 20, 1947, in Chicago. She died May 5, 2001.

Mr. Dodge was employed with the Illinois Central Railroad for 44 years, retiring as superintendent of the Iowa Division in 1982. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Air Corps, piloting B17s and B29s.

Survivors include a son, John W. IV (Angela) of Waterloo; a daughter, Elizabeth A. Dodge of Iowa City; three grandsons, John W. Dodge V, Eric (Kristi) Dodge and Martin Dodge; three great-grandchildren, John W. "Jake" Dodge VI, Danielle Dodge and Braiden Trevey; and a brother, Richard Dodge of Colorado Springs, Colo.

Preceded in death by two brothers, Harlan and Jere.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Edward's Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery, where full military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 138 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1623. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service.
